Due to the extension of the emergency measures due to Covid-19 until the end of August, the Government has confirmed that letting agents can continue to carry these checks out by video call.   These changes were a temporary measure to make it easier for letting agents and landlords to carry these checks out.

The short-term changes to the scheme, which requires landlords to check that all tenants who occupy their properties have legal status to live in the UK, have meant that since last year, the Home Office has not required landlords to see original documents. Instead, it currently allows checks to be undertaken over video calls.

Since March 2020 and the outbreak of coronavirus, prospective tenants have been able to submit scanned documents and not originals to prove their identity. Additionally, there are new rules being introduced when checking the immigration status of tenants who are EU nationals.
